Director of the Harvard Square Library

The Harvard Square Library, a digital library that features biographies, books, historical documents, and other materials about Unitarian Universalism and religious liberalism, seeks a part-time Director.    The Harvard Square Library collection includes biographies of notable Unitarian Universalists and other individuals relevant to the liberal religious tradition, as well as texts illustrating historic and contemporary Unitarian Universalist perspectives on:

  • Denominational history and identity
  • Worship and ritual arts
  • Religious education
  • Women and religion
  • Religion, culture, and society
  • Theology and philosophy
  • History of Cambridge and Harvard University

Harvard Square Library seeks to present materials in usable formats for edification, research, and enjoyment.

Job Description:

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Harvard Square Library Director selects or creates, edits, and makes available new content for the website.   The Director is also responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the website, either by contracting with outside providers or supervising an internal team.  The Director will recruit and direct the work of part-time technical support staff and volunteers, secure copyright permission for new online media, respond to information requests, communicate with sponsors, and increase awareness of Harvard Square Library through social media and other communications.   If the Director desires to expand the program, s/he must take a lead in fundraising.  The Harvard Square Library’s governing board is based at the First Parish in Cambridge (Unitarian Universalist) in Massachusetts, but the Director may elect to work from any location.

Required Skills:

The ideal candidate will have solid knowledge of Unitarian Universalist history and tradition, demonstrated ability to work with teams, effective written communication skills, demonstrated ability to set and meet objectives while working independently, and excellent attention to detail.  The Director must have basic knowledge of web technologies and a passion for sharing the Unitarian Universalist tradition.

Desired Skills:

WordPress and social media skills are desired.

Compensation:

The position is for 10 hours/week.  We offer an annual stipend of $10K.
