THE EVERLASTING WAR
Let me not cry, “Peace, peace!” when there should be no peace in the everlasting war of the better against the worse.
Let me not accept as inevitable any unnecessary suffering, or cry, “Impossible!” before the dream of a more just world.
Keep alive within me this day, O God, the sacred flame of indigna tion. Help me to say, “No!” to what is inhumane, that by my word and courage the forces of fairness may be strengthened in my time.
