Cry, the Beloved Country, the most acclaimed book by Alan Paton (1903-1988), sold more than 15 million copies. In addition, it was made into two films. When Alan delivered the William Belden Noble Lectures at Harvard University in 1977, he agreed that the lecture — which drew large audiences in the Harvard University Memorial Church, be published. I am grateful that the Rev. Peter Gomes gave permission for me to edit the manuscript for publication. It is widely appreciated that Alan Paton, the writer who was born in South Africa, was the founder and president of the South African Liberal Party (1953-68) which opposed apartheid and was banned by the racist government. His autobiographies were Towards the Mountain (1980) and Journey Continued (1988).
